Termites have been documented in 55 million year old fossil formations, and are relatives of the cockroach family. It's been estimated there are between 45-50 species in the USA alone. Termites need wood for food and soil for moisture. They only consume wood or cellulose materials, are very secretive, and often go undetected until much damage is done.
Subterranean termite infestations generally develop from colonies in soil. They commonly enter the building through structural wood or foundation walls adjacent to the soil. In cases of houses built partly or completely on slabs, infestation occurs through expansion joints, cracks, and utility and sewer pipe openings.
Homes and other buildings can be pretreated at the time of construction to protect against termite attack. As an added benefit, the pre-treatments can offer protection against ants and other ground dwelling insects. Whether pre-treating at the time of construction, or treating an existing structure with residual insecticides, the basic principle of termite control is to break the connection between wood and soil.
An alternative control methodology to soil-applied termiticides is the use of termite baits. Foraging termites consume the bait, and then share it with their nest mates, resulting in a slow colony decline and eventual elimination of the termite colony.
More homes in the United States are damaged annually by termites than fire.
